"Bill the Bat Goes to Space" by Christina Drzewoszewski

They sat on the ground
at the top of the hill.
The warmth of the day
took on a slight chill.
An array of colors
now painted the sky
as the sun slowly said
its final goodbye.
The moon took its place,
as the day turned to night.
It was big and round,
with the brightest of light.
It now seemed so close
they could touch it at will.
Cal the cat stood up
followed closely by Bill.
Their hands reached out
and grasped in the air,
but no one came close
to the moon that hung there.
“The moon and the stars
don’t look far away.
I just want to touch it,"
they heard the bat say.
I think I can do it,
I know how to fly.
I will fly straight up,
I should give it a try.”
“You should, yes, you should,”
said Cal the cat.
“Such an amazing feat
for one tiny bat!”
“You don’t see a bat
on the moon every day.
A flight to the moon
is impressive, I’d say.
The headlines would read,
"A bat lands on the moon!”
and a Hollywood film
would follow by June.
They surely will throw you
the grandest parade,
and a key to the city
would have to be made.
You’d walk down the street
and they’d call out your name.
Think of the fortune,
just think of the fame!”
As the bat and the cat
stared into the sky,
the mouse looked at Bill
and said, “Give it a try.”
“Yes, give it a go,”
encouraged the cat.
“I think that I will,”
replied Bill the bat.
The owl on his perch
was shaking his head.
“Have the three of you
lost your marbles?” he said.
“The moon is millions
of miles away!
You will never ever
come close, I must say.”
“I would not be so sure
about that,” said the bat.
“Maybe it's time
to find out,” said the cat.
With a smile on his face,
Bill flapped his wings
and his skinny legs
pushed off like two springs.
He started out North
to build up some speed.
A trip to the moon
would need speed to succeed.
His friends on the ground
were cheering him on.
He went up and up
until Bill was near gone.
Bill flew towards the stars
with incredible speed.
“I will prove that owl wrong,
he will have to concede.
I will be the first bat
to walk on the moon.
I’ll take a few pictures
and be back home soon.”
Just seconds later
his wings weighed a ton.
His breathing got heavy,
Bill’s trip was now done.
From that moment on
he had no memory at all,
his head got sleepy
and he started to fall.
From one mile high
he fell like a rock.
The cat and the mouse
just stood there in shock.
The moon cast a light
so he couldn't be missed.
“He’s falling, he’s falling!”
Cal the cat hissed.
A shadowy figure
flew into the night,
swooped down on the bat
and snagged him just right.
It gracefully glided,
with wings stretched out wide.
Al the owl then set down
with his friend by his side.
Bill the bat woke up
a little confused
and maybe his pride
just a little bit bruised.
“A bat on the moon,”
Bill heard the owl say.
“I have seen it all now.”
Then Al flew away.
They all watched the moon
from the peak of the hill.
“It still looks so close
I could touch it,” said Bill.
This made them all laugh,
then Bill said with a sigh,
“Won’t do that again,
but I did have to try!”

Christina's story inspired me to write "Bill the Bat: A Trip to the Moon"
|
Each year I visit schools across the
United States and I realize with each
visit that I have been given the
opportunity to make a great impact on
the lives of many children. I hope that
I can continue to inspire children to
discover a love of the arts and a desire
to read and write.
This year I am introducing:
"The Inspiration Project"
Bill the bat knows how to fly,
but how far up in the sky.
Bill the bat has a mission,
but that mission isn't to go fishing.
The mission is to go to space,
but he needs a space helmet to protect his face.
He goes to see Mike the mouse,
hoping he has a space helmet at his house.
He goes to the space store they have helmets there,
but the prices there are very unfair.
Bill the bat is able to get the money,
his friends think his idea is funny.
He realizes his idea is outrageous,
tomorrow he'll just dream he's famous.
I'm sorry to say my friend,
this story must end.
Their hands reached out
and grasped in the air,
but no one came close
to the moon that hung there.
“The moon and the stars
don’t look far away.
I just want to touch it,"
they heard the bat say.
